Class Syllabus

Here is a copy of my class syllabus that was sent home at open house. I am looking forward to the upcoming school year. -Mr. V.

Dear Parents,
I would like to take this time to introduce myself.  My name is Josh Vandike and I am beginning my twelfth year at Our Lady of Snows School. I hope that we will be able to work closely together to help provide your child with a well rounded education in a comfortable and challenging environment. I encourage you to contact me with any questions, concerns or comments you might have. You may always write me a note, send an email or call me. My contact information is listed below:

Phone-573-619-6189-please no phone calls after 9 p.m. or before 7 a.m.
Email: jvandik100@gmail.com

    DISCIPLINE PLAN

I believe that all students should behave appropriately in the classroom. I will not tolerate any behavior or action that prevents me from teaching or any student from learning.

    Rules:
    1. Follow all the rules in the handbook.
    2. Respect your peers and elders.
    3. Display a Christian attitude at all times.
    4. Conduct yourself in a Christian manner at all times.
    5. Turn your work in on time.
    6. Be a good role model for younger students.

    Consequences:
    1. Verbal Reminders
    2. Minutes missed at recess in intervals of 10. (Parents Notified Via Note, Email or Phone Call).
    3. Office Referral

    HOMEWORK POLICY

Students are expected to turn their work in on time. Homework is due at 7:45 A.M. on its due date. Students are expected to keep track of their homework via a folder. I provide a homework folder for them or they may use a folder of their choice.  If a student has a question on their homework from the previous night, I will be happy to help them on it before they turn it in, but I expect them to let me know before school in the cafeteria or when we first get into the classroom for the day. Students will receive two homework passes per quarter. The homework passes give them an extra day to complete their work. After the second homework pass has been used for the quarter I will notify parents via a note, email or phone call. Any late assignments after that will result in a zero but is expected to be completed during recess time. Candy is handed out at the end of the quarter for unused homework passes. If a student is absent they have as many days as they were absent to turn their work in. If a student is having trouble meeting the absent work deadline please feel free to contact me and we can work out an alternative due date within reason.
    LOCKERS

Students are provided with a locker for the school year. These lockers are located in the hallway next to our classroom. These lockers do not have locks. Most students choose not to put a lock on their locker. If you choose to purchase a lock for your son or daughter the code for the lock needs to be turned into me so we have a record of it. Due to the noise that lockers can create students are limited to certain times when they can go to their lockers. Students will need to get all of the stuff they need for morning classes out of their locker before school starts. They will be able to go to their locker after recess and at this time they will need to get everything they need for their afternoon classes. I do understand that sometimes people forget something from their locker and I will allow them to go get it as long as it does not become a reoccurring problem.

    GRADED WORK FOLDERS

I send a folder with graded work and a newsletter home on Fridays. The folders are to be signed by a parent and returned to me the following week. If I have not received a folder signed and returned by the start of class Tuesday morning, students will miss 10 minutes of recess time. If I have still not received it by Wednesday morning, students will miss all of their recess until I receive it.

    CHRISTIAN SERVICE HOURS

Christian service is a wonderful aspect of the Catholic School System. Students are expected to preform 20 hours of Christian Service per year around the school. This should not be a problem for anyone to reach. Christian Service will not affect homework load for that day.

    CLASSROOM JOBS

In order to help maintain a neat and orderly classroom environment students are assigned jobs on a weekly basis. Jobs rotate on a weekly basis and not everyone will have an assigned job every week. Jobs include assignment board recorder, housekeeper, computer keeper, messenger, trash collector, white board cleaner, prayer leader and door holder.

    READING COUNTS

I encourage all students to participate in the Reading Counts Program. I believe reading is a vital part of a child’s education. I expect students to have a book at school to read on a daily basis. Students are to read when they finish their homework for the day. I prefer students to take Reading Counts quizzes when they are available. If not available, they may write a book report over what they read and turn it into me to receive their points for that book.

I am looking forward to working with you and your son or daughter during the upcoming school year. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact me at any time.
God Bless,
Mr. V.
